Alcohol 'more harmful than heroin' says Prof David Nutt

Professor David Nutt: "In terms of the cost to society, alcohol causes the biggest harm"

Alcohol is more harmful than heroin or crack when the overall dangers to the individual and society are considered, according to a study in the Lancet.
The report is co-authored by Professor David Nutt, the former government chief drugs adviser who was sacked in 2009.
It ranked 20 drugs on 16 measures of harm to users and to wider society.
Heroin, crack and crystal meth were deemed worst for individuals, with alcohol, heroin and crack cocaine worst for society, and alcohol worst overall.
The study by the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs also said tobacco and cocaine were judged to be equally harmful, while ecstasy and LSD were among the least damaging.

Prof Nutt told the BBC: "Overall, alcohol is the most harmful drug because it's so widely used.
"Crack cocaine is more addictive than alcohol but because alcohol is so widely used there are hundreds of thousands of people who crave alcohol every day, and those people will go to extraordinary lengths to get it."

Marchelle Michel of WFFT Local did a stellar video story; but it seems to have vanished. It was very professional; very neutral/fair and unbiased, and told the story accuratey and concisely. Seems theres people who dont approve? and now all we have is the print edition.

'Legalize Marijuana' nickname knocks Roach off ballot

Monday, March 5, 2012 - 11:16 am

A nickname has cost perennial candidate Dave Roach a spot on the May 8 primary ballot, handing the Democrat Party nomination for Allen County Commissioner to retired firefighter Gordon Anthony.
“A candidate’s nickname (on the ballot) is supposed to be a name by which they are commonly known,” Director of Elections Beth Dlug said, explaining why the Election Board last week ruled the nickname Roach included in his filing application – “Legalize Marijuana” – to be invalid.
Because the candidate-filing deadline had already passed, Roach could not resubmit the paperwork, effectively removing him from the ballot. He could still appeal the board’s decision in court, however, Dlug said.
Dlug said the board acted in response to a Republican challenge to Roach’s nickname. County GOP Party Chairman Steve Shine told The News-Sentinel last month he considered Roach’s unusual ballot identification to be a political statement, not a true nickname. “That was intended for things like ‘Bob,’ ” he said.
Anthony was an unsuccessful City Council candidate last year.

Good luck on your appeal - I run every year under the legalize marijuana party ( political party) - this is my way of getting legalize marijuana on the ballot every year.

Looks like we won't have Allen County's merry prankster of politics to kick around this year:

Not sure why Shine did that. Someone running as "legalize Marijuana" doesn't exactly make the Democrats look good, you know? And Roach can't use the occasion of a political contest to make a political statement? Hmmmm.
